Damion Downs stepped up to score in the sixth round of a penalty shootout, propelling the U.S. to the semi-finals of the Concacaf Gold Cup after a thrilling match against Costa Rica that ended in a 2-2 draw.
The U.S. team will face Guatemala on Wednesday after they surprised Canada in their own shootout earlier. Mexico will play against Honduras in the other semi-final.
USA’s coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his team’s resilience, stating, “They showed great character today.”
In the shootout, goalkeeper Matt Freese made three critical saves against Costa Rica’s Juan Pablo Vargas, Francisco Calvo, and Andy Rojas. “Penalties are my thing,” Freese said, emphasizing his preparation leading up to the game.
This win marks the U.S.’s remarkable achievement of reaching the semi-finals in 17 out of 18 Gold Cups, a streak that has continued for 13 tournaments since their last penalty loss to Colombia in the 2000 quarter-finals.
During the match, Diego Luna and Max Arfsten scored for the U.S., while Alonso Martinez netted the equalizer for Costa Rica, responding in the 71st minute to keep the game alive. This matchup challenged the U.S., coming after a smoother group stage where they enjoyed an 8-1 goal difference.
An interesting rule change for this year’s tournament eliminated extra time, which adds more intensity to the knockout rounds. John Tolkin had a chance to secure victory for the U.S. in the fifth round, but his shot was saved by Costa Rica’s Keylor Navas. Freese’s save set the stage for Downs to clinch the win.
Despite being without several star players, including Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, the U.S. squad has shown depth and skill. Meanwhile, Costa Rica was also missing key players due to suspensions and injuries, which played a role in their performance.
Penalties have been pivotal in this tournament; three of Costa Rica’s group stage goals were from spots, showcasing the high-pressure situations teams face in knockout games. As the U.S. prepares for its next match, fans are eager to see if they can continue their winning streak and capture another Gold Cup title.
