Fresno State’s men’s basketball team is under investigation for possible connections to sports gambling. This news comes after whispers of wrongdoing, prompting the NCAA and the university to step in.
The school has made some immediate changes: one player has been removed, and two others are suspended, missing the recent game against Air Force which ended in a disappointing 72-69 loss.
The investigation started after a tip-off led Fresno State to conduct an internal review, which eventually involved the NCAA. The university announced that guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins are being withheld from play as they address matters related to eligibility.
Before their suspension, Weaver and Collins were key players for the team, averaging 12.5 and 12 points per game, respectively. Collins also shone with 4.7 assists per game, making their absence felt on the court.
Additionally, a former player, Mykell Robinson, is also part of the investigation. He hasn’t played since January 11 and is no longer with the team, having averaged 10.3 points and 6.2 rebounds earlier in the season.
As for the team’s performance, things are looking tough. The Bulldogs have now lost 10 straight games and hold a record of 5-23 overall, with just one win in the Mountain West Conference. Their recent loss to San Diego State set a record for the most losses in a season.
