I’m not an Indiana University sports fan. Never have been, and honestly, I thought it wouldn’t change. But today, it feels different. I, like many non-IU fans, find myself cheering for the Hoosiers. It’s not just about football; it’s about the reputation of our state and the chance to see IU win the Big Ten.
Growing up, I didn’t care for IU athletics at all. Rivalries, especially in basketball, fueled that. Purdue and IU fans often clashed, especially during those intense matchups. Now, the situation is shifting.
Bloomington has a special place in my heart. I love its charm: Kirkwood Avenue, Kilroy’s, and The Bluebird. I spent great weekends there, soaking up the atmosphere. My personal connections run deep; I’ve lived there, married nearby, and worked in journalism with many talented IU grads. The Media School at IU is known for producing some of the best journalists in the field.
In my career, there were days when tension ran high. You could feel it before, during, and after the Purdue-IU games. The joy or dread of going to work depended on the outcome. But this season? It feels different.
Coach Curt Cignetti has transformed the IU football program in an unexpected way. The recent win against Ohio State—a first in 30 matches—was monumental. They’ve become a top contender for the College Football Championship.
How can I root against this team now? For 45 years, I rooted for Purdue and whoever played against IU. I even enjoyed watching them stumble in previous years. But this team has changed everything for me. Maybe it’s a new perspective with age, but I’m ready to cheer for the Hoosiers.
While I grew up a Buckeyes fan, my loyalty shifted during my time at Purdue. Yet, I’ve always secretly cheered for Ohio in big games. Now, it seems I’ve found a new appreciation for IU. In light of their remarkable journey this season, I expect them to do well in the Rose Bowl. I’m ready to enjoy the ride to the playoffs without abandoning my history.
I may not sport IU gear or wear their colors just yet, but finding common ground feels refreshing. This season is about unity and pride. As Hoosiers continue to succeed, I’ll savor the joy of this unexpected journey.
