From Dreams to Reality: Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Shares His Journey to Space at IAF Event

Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla recently shared his journey from being a shy child to becoming the first Indian to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the Axiom-4 mission. Speaking at an event in Delhi, he reflected on how he grew up hearing stories about Rakesh Sharma’s historic flight but never imagined he’d one day fly to space himself.

Shukla emphasized that the Axiom-4 mission is just the beginning for India’s space exploration. He stated, “It’s a great time for India’s space exploration.” He plans to collaborate with ISRO to further dreams of space travel and exploration, including the ambitious Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send a crewed flight into orbit by 2027.

During the ceremony, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised Shukla and the three other Gaganyaan astronauts, highlighting the significance of their work in moving toward “Atmanirbhar Bharat.” Shukla expressed gratitude for the recognition and remarked on the importance of the knowledge gained from the ISS mission, which he believes will help shape future missions.

His experience on the ISS lasted 18 days, during which he adapted to living in microgravity. “The lessons I learned from this mission are unique and will be crucial for executing our future missions,” he noted. This firsthand experience not only benefits Shukla but also serves as a foundation for India’s growing ambitions in space.

Shukla’s story inspires many in India, especially the youth. He encouraged aspiring space explorers to nurture their curiosity and work hard. “There are immense opportunities out there,” he said, urging them to stay focused in an age filled with distractions.

Indeed, interest in space exploration is soaring in India. Recent surveys show that nearly 75% of young people are excited about the country’s space program and its future, reflecting a cultural shift towards science and technology. The Gaganyaan mission, launched by Prime Minister Modi in 2018, symbolizes India’s intent to lead in space exploration and innovation.

Shukla’s mission is not just a personal achievement but also a landmark moment for India’s space journey. As national pride grows, so does the hope for a future where India actively participates in the global conversation about space exploration.
