In the besieged city of El Fasher, reports emerged of the tragic loss of Mohamed Khamis Douda, a prominent activist. For months, Douda remained entrenched in the city, working tirelessly to document the suffering around him. On October 26, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control, confirming his death.
As the spokesperson for the Zamzam displacement camp in Darfur, Douda was deeply embedded in the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Earlier this year, he had been injured during an RSF attack in Zamzam, leading him to seek refuge in El Fasher. Despite the increasing danger, Douda kept communicating with journalists, shedding light on the dire conditions residents faced.
The situation in El Fasher grew increasingly desperate as the RSF restricted access to essential resources like food, water, and medicine. Videos circulated of the fears shared by those outside the city, with reports of threats against Douda aimed at silencing him.
Survivors described their painful daily struggles: the hunger, constant shelling, and the threat of drones watching every move. Douda documented this dire reality, sharing that finding food became nearly impossible, forcing many to resort to eating animal remnants and even hides.
Yet, amid the chaos, Douda risked his life to help others. He organized food deliveries, documented human rights abuses, and arranged burials for the deceased. His activism, however, made him a target; he gathered intelligence about foreign mercenaries involved in the violence.
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan resonates deeply. According to recent UN estimates, over 5.6 million people have fled their homes due to the violence. Human Rights Watch highlighted an alarming trend: the ongoing targeting of activists and journalists, as well as increasing casualties among civilians. Recent satellite imagery confirms extensive destruction in El Fasher, illustrating the scale of the conflict.
Expert Shayna Lewis from Preventing and Ending Mass Atrocities emphasized the devastating effect Douda’s death will have on the next generation of Sudanese leaders. “The loss of activists like Mohamed deeply affects the overall push for justice and peace in Sudan,” she noted. His bravery and commitment will be remembered as a beacon of hope amidst despair.
As news of arrests and killings of local activists continues to surface, it’s clear the fight for peace is far from over. The world watches, but for those in Sudan, the struggle for basic survival and human rights persists.
