EAST LANSING, Mich. — Andrew Kim’s journey with the trombone began in the sixth grade, inspired by a friendship. He followed his best friend into music class. “I just wanted to sit next to him,” Kim recalled. That simple choice led him from a hobby to a serious passion.
Now studying jazz at Michigan State University, Kim practices between three to six hours daily. He believes that playing a brass instrument is a bit like being in a demanding relationship. “If you take a day off, you can feel it,” he says. Just like athletes, musicians need to stay sharp. Every practice session contributes to his skill and preparation.
His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Kim has won multiple competitions, including the prestigious U.S. Army Band’s Solo Jazz Competition. This recognition showcases his talent on a national level.
Looking ahead, Kim is set to pursue a master’s in jazz studies at the Eastman School of Music in New York. He dreams of teaching in the future, feeling a strong need to share jazz traditions. “Jazz is about passing knowledge through generations,” he explains. “Keeping this music alive is really important.”
Expert opinions support Kim’s view on jazz education. According to a recent study by the National Endowment for the Arts, music education significantly boosts creative skills and emotional development in students. As Kim prepares for his next chapter, it’s clear that his journey is just beginning.
