KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Payton Toombs, a senior at the University of Tennessee, celebrated her graduation in a Cleveland hospital after a car crash left her unable to walk. Her family surprised her with a graduation party in her hospital room, turning what could have been a devastating moment into a joyful one.
“I was so emotional,” Payton shared, reflecting on the support from her family and nurses. She emphasized the hard work of nurses, saying her time as a patient offered her a new perspective on their role in healthcare.
Payton’s fiancé, Maverick Marmol, helped keep the surprise under wraps. “Every time she’d ask, I just had to hold in the excitement,” he said.
The couple was involved in a serious accident when a driver, who had stolen a car, hit them. As she recovers, Payton is focused on rehabilitation, aiming to walk again by August, just in time for her wedding to Marmol.
Currently, Payton is engaged in intensive rehab while taking summer classes to complete her master’s program once she’s back in Tennessee. Recent statistics show that more than 50% of crash survivors face long-term physical challenges, highlighting the importance of support systems during recovery.
The driver, Zayd Alameed, is facing serious charges, including murder, in connection with the crash. His next court date is set for June 10.
