Dolan Ma, a student at Binghamton University, recalls a memorable moment during his time in Japan. Waiting at a Starbucks, he felt anxious about ordering coffee. He had been studying Japanese for about a year, but wasn’t fluent yet. As he listened to the cashier and the customer, he felt compelled to adapt and navigate through a small cultural challenge. Dolan will graduate in May with a degree in Business Administration, concentrating in finance and management information systems, plus a minor in Japanese. He joked about starting this journey; he never expected to be where he is now. His first role after graduation is with Bridge Green Upcycle, a startup focusing on clean energy by upcycling lithium-ion batteries. This innovative approach is part of a growing trend in sustainability.
In his job, he dives into market analysis, tracking prices on essential battery materials like lithium, nickel, and cobalt. He constantly monitors global events that might impact these prices. “It’s fascinating work,” Ma says, highlighting how the industry is responding to rising energy demands and environmental concerns.
Dolan’s background shaped his interests. Growing up in Brooklyn, he translated for his Chinese-born parents, which sparked his love for languages and culture. He studied Spanish and French in high school, then chose Japanese at Binghamton to explore cultural similarities with his own heritage. This diversity of learning enriched his interpersonal skills and boosted his confidence in tackling challenges in business.
A vital part of his education was the School of Management (SOM). Ma appreciates how SOM helped him develop skills for impactful presentations. “Making a compelling slide deck is an art,” he says, recognizing that clarity and creativity are key in a competitive environment.
Dolan’s path included a significant internship at e-Zinc, an energy storage company. His dedication there caught the attention of industry leaders. When the opportunity with Bridge Green Upcycle arose, he jumped at it, eager to grow in a startup environment. “You just have to show up and be ready to learn,” he advises.
The clean energy arena is expanding rapidly. According to a recent report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the global energy transition is expected to create millions of jobs in the coming years. Ma’s involvement in this sector positions him at the forefront of these exciting changes.
