This proactive approach led to my first brand deals, which taught me the ins and outs of social media marketing, including negotiation and invoicing. Now, these relationships are a key source of my income.
Break the Mold
For a while, I was bothered by my layoff. The constant news about tech layoffs made it seem like finding another big tech job was hopeless. Many people in the same boat felt lost. What I needed to remember was that if the opportunities aren’t available, you can create your own.
I’m lucky to have fewer responsibilities, but I understand this isn’t the case for everyone. There are risks, but sometimes, taking them opens doors.
Be Open About Your Journey
After sharing my layoff story on TikTok, I was surprised by the support I received. Many viewers reached out, sharing their experiences and struggles. This genuine connection led to new friendships and even opportunities, like getting into voice acting—something I never expected.
Learn New Skills
When I began developing “Lily’s World XD,” I had no coding experience. I always told myself I wasn’t cut out for it. But after my layoff, I decided to learn. With help from friends and online resources, I taught myself programming. This new skill became essential for launching my game.
Share Your Ideas Early
A fellow game developer encouraged me to share my work, even if it wasn’t perfect. I posted early mockups of my game, and the response was overwhelming. It validated my idea and motivated me to keep going. Sharing your progress opens up feedback that can guide your project’s direction.
Realize Your Value
Losing my job at Meta shook my confidence. I derived so much of my identity from being affiliated with a major company. But talking to others who wished they had the freedom to pursue their passions reminded me of my worth. What I once saw as a setback became the foundation for a bold new path.
Making a leap into the unknown is challenging, but it can lead to wonderful experiences and growth. If you’re in a tough spot, remember, you might be closer to your next exciting chapter than you think.
