Jake Retzlaff is stepping into a new chapter with a fresh set of nicknames. The former quarterback for Brigham Young University (BYU) has moved to Tulane University in New Orleans, where he’s embraced titles like “Kosher Cannon” and “Shabbat Shotgun.” These playful names come from the lively Jewish community at Tulane, a big change from his time at BYU, where he was one of only three Jewish students on campus.
His transition wasn’t planned. In May, Retzlaff faced a civil sexual assault lawsuit, which has since been dismissed. This led him to leave BYU after facing a suspension for violating the school’s strict honor code, which prohibits premarital sex. While he described the relationship as consensual, the situation was complex.
Retzlaff has fond memories of BYU, a place he says shaped him significantly. “It helped me connect stronger with my faith,” he shared, wearing a Star of David around his neck. His experience at BYU even led to a sponsorship deal with Manischewitz, a Jewish food brand, resulting in special boxes of matzah featuring his likeness.
His move to Tulane marks a significant contrast. The university is often jokingly referred to as “Jewlane” due to its large Jewish student population, making up about 37% of the students. “It’s so opposite from BYU,” he said, clearly excited about the new environment. Retzlaff’s commitment to his faith remains strong, which makes this shift even sweeter for him.
Last season, he led BYU to an impressive 11-2 record as a starter. Now, at Tulane, he aims to build on his skills and help the team succeed. Coach Jon Sumrall noted the thorough vetting process before bringing Retzlaff on board. Retzlaff will compete for the starting quarterback position, especially following the departure of a teammate who was arrested.
Even though Tulane didn’t offer a scholarship, Retzlaff is okay with being a walk-on. He believes that focusing on long-term success is more important than immediate financial gain. “I know that I’ll get what I deserve at the next level,” he mentioned.
As he settles into Tulane, fans and teammates are looking forward to seeing how Retzlaff’s unique background and experiences will shape his journey on the field. With his talent and dedication, he’s ready to embrace this exciting new chapter in his life.
