Triathlon is one of the toughest endurance sports out there, requiring grit, discipline, and resilience. Bharat Ruhil, a triathlete from Delhi, understands this journey all too well. He recently competed in the Ironman 70.3 in Warsaw, clocking a personal best of 4 hours and 37 minutes.

Ruhil’s path to the triathlon wasn’t straightforward. He started as a runner but faced frequent injuries that led to knee surgery. “I thought my sports career was over, but after rehab, I decided to give it one last shot and switched to triathlon in 2017,” he shared.

His transition wasn’t easy. Ruhil began competing in the Olympic distance category and quickly made a mark, finishing fifth in his age group at the 2019 Ironman Goa, which qualified him for the World Championship. “I trained hard, and qualifying was thrilling, but then COVID hit, and the event got postponed,” he recalled.

A major setback came in 2021 when he survived a road accident just before the Commonwealth Games trials in Finland. “That was tough. I had to undergo months of rehab,” he said. But he didn’t give up. In 2023, he competed in the World Championship, proving that he could rise from adversity. His recent performance in Warsaw showed that he is one of India’s fastest triathletes.

Yet, he faces challenges, especially in swimming. “In Delhi, we lack open-water training spots. Other cities have lakes, but we rely on pools, which isn’t the same,” he explained. This makes adapting to different race conditions tricky, especially with cooler water temperatures in Europe.

Triathlons combine swimming, cycling, and running, and each discipline requires intense dedication. Ruhil aims to become India’s fastest triathlete. He’s also coaching other athletes, inspired by his own experiences.

He notes a key difference between Olympic and Ironman distances. While the Olympic triathlon features 1500 meters of swimming, 40 km of cycling, and 10 km of running, the Half Ironman (70.3) includes longer distances in all three categories. Currently, Ruhil is focused solely on Ironman events, with races planned in Germany and beyond.

Funding has been a challenge for him; triathlon can be expensive. “In the beginning, I funded a lot of my training myself, but I now have a sponsor supporting me,” he mentioned. His support system includes a strength and conditioning coach from Australia, which has been vital to his training.

Preparation for international races is crucial. “I usually need a week to adjust to new conditions. I arrived in Poland early, checked my bike, and adapted to the weather before the race,” he explained. This attention to detail is what sets dedicated athletes like Ruhil apart.

According to recent statistics, the popularity of triathlons has surged globally. Reports show an increase in participation, with events expanding in countries like India. This growth reflects a broader trend of more individuals seeking challenges that enhance both physical fitness and mental resilience.
