For many students, stepping onto a campus marks the beginning of their journey. But for me, this journey started much earlier. Growing up, Michigan State University (MSU) was more than just a school; it was part of my family’s identity. I spent my childhood immersed in Spartan traditions—attending game days, tailgating, and proudly wearing green and white.
My dad, a devoted Spartan fan who came to MSU from another state, infused our home with MSU spirit. Fall weekends revolved around football games and tailgates, a delightful routine that included packing up the car early and heading to our favorite spot at Farm and Shaw Lane. These experiences deeply shaped my childhood.
Despite all those weekends spent on campus, I didn’t know how much more MSU had to offer until I got here as a student. I thought I understood the campus, having roamed around the stadium many times. But exploring beyond those familiar areas opened my eyes to new possibilities. Walking along the river trail, visiting the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, and discovering academic buildings I had never noticed were all part of my awakening.
My family’s connection to MSU runs deep. My sister and I even wore tiny cheerleader uniforms before we could walk! Our home is filled with MSU memorabilia, and I often felt that choosing a college was predetermined. My sister’s last-minute decision to attend MSU influenced my own choices. I only applied to two schools: one nearby and Michigan State.
When we toured the campus, skepticism lingered in my mind. “Why are we doing this? I know this place by heart,” I thought. However, as we ventured past the stadium, I quickly learned there was so much more to discover.
Once I arrived as a student, everything changed. I found hidden gems on campus—new spaces to study, vibrant community groups, and a sense of belonging that felt personal. The atmosphere shifts drastically from a lively game day to a quiet Tuesday, but both have their own unique energy.
Becoming a Spartan is about more than just following family traditions. It’s about carving out a space for yourself within a community that welcomes you with open arms. Even if I had walked those sidewalks countless times, experiencing MSU as a student has revealed a whole new world to me.
