Micaela Alpert’s Inspiring Journey to Medical School

Micaela Alpert, a childhood cancer survivor, is embarking on an exciting new chapter. At just 22, she has begun her medical studies at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.

Micaela’s fight against cancer began when she was in the 8th grade in 2016. She faced a tough prognosis, but thanks to innovative immunotherapy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, her tumors shrank, giving her a second chance at life.

While in high school, she became an EMT, fueled by her passion for helping others. Her Make-A-Wish trip allowed her to shadow professionals at the Texas Heart Institute, sparking her interest in cardiothoracic surgery.

After completing her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Micaela worked in the hematology division at the same hospital where she was treated. Now, wearing her white coat, she is ready to follow her dreams in pediatric surgery.

Micaela aims not only to become a skilled surgeon but also to offer mentorship and educational support to those facing similar challenges. Her story is a testament to resilience and the impact of innovative medical treatment.

According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization, around 15,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S. Micaela is an inspiring example of what can be achieved despite the odds.
