From the Gridiron to the Classroom: Jack Kiser’s Journey to Becoming Notre Dame’s All-Time Games Played Leader and Top Business Student

In January 2023, Tom Mendoza, a proud Notre Dame alum and successful businessman, met with the Fighting Irish football team. He’s always passionate about giving back, sharing his time as a mentor and his support for students.

Mendoza urged the players to reach out anytime, and many did. One of them was Jack Kiser, a standout linebacker and a dedicated business student. They connected over Zoom, discussing their beginnings and aspirations. Mendoza was genuinely impressed with Jack from the start.

Now, Kiser is set to play in his 70th and final game for the Irish against Ohio State in the College Football Playoff championship. Since joining Notre Dame in January 2019, he has impacted his team both on the field and in the community.

As a team captain, he leads with statistics that include 85 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and two forced fumbles. He’s one of four players who started all 15 games this season. Even with injuries on the team, the defense has been solid, allowing just 14.3 points per game, second best in the nation.

Kiser’s academic achievements mirror his football success. He completed his undergraduate degree in just three and a half years, boasting a 3.82 GPA while majoring in business analytics. After graduation in 2022, he continued onto a Master of Science in Accountancy, dedicating an entire summer to catch up on courses.

Sometimes, Kiser had to miss classes due to football. He approached Professor Keith Urtel, who recorded lectures so Kiser could keep up. Urtel was impressed by Kiser’s engagement. “He’d always come prepared and asked the right questions,” he recalled.

Despite starting accounting with no background, Kiser excelled, graduating with a 3.97 GPA and receiving multiple awards for his hard work and leadership.

Since then, he has continued to take graduate business courses. In Spring 2024, he volunteered to help prepare tax returns for local residents, especially seniors, earning praise for his kindness and patience.

“Jack is always patient and takes time to listen,” said Colleen Creighton, an accounting professor who oversaw the tax program. “He makes the process less intimidating.”

Alongside his studies, Kiser shares his financial knowledge with teammates, guiding them on managing their finances, especially regarding Name, Image, and Likeness deals.

He also plays a mentoring role on the field, helping younger linebackers navigate the game. Coaches praise him for his leadership and support, making him an essential figure for the team.

This year, Kiser was a finalist for multiple awards recognizing his contributions both on and off the field. He has worked with the Cleats for a Cause initiative, selecting charities for fundraising efforts and connecting with local pediatric patients through the Fight for Life program.

“I didn’t come to Notre Dame just to play football,” Kiser shared. “I came to become a better person.” He believes in striving for excellence in every aspect of life, not just athletics.

Kiser has made the most of his time at Notre Dame, utilizing the alumni network and the support provided by programs designed to prepare athletes for life after college. Mendoza, who often shares insights with the team, has taken a special interest in Kiser’s growth.

Looking ahead, Kiser hopes to enter the NFL but also has aspirations in the financial sector. His professors and Mendoza agree he has a bright future ahead, no matter which path he follows.

In preparation for the championship game, Kiser and the team practiced at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, focusing on keeping fresh and ready. He aims to end his college career on a high note by leading the Irish to their first championship since 1988.

“Jack represents everything we value at Notre Dame,” Coach Al Golden said. “He’s a blessing to everyone around him.”
