From Tribal Roots to Global Stage: The Inspiring Journey of Savitri Purti, Hockey Star – Celebrating Women’s Day 2026

Savitri Purti: A Journey from a Tribal Village to National Hockey Player

Savitri Purti was born on April 20, 1966, in Konba village, Jharkhand. Growing up in a tribal family, she faced many hardships. Despite limited resources, Savitri had big dreams. From playing hockey with a bamboo stick in her village to becoming a member of the Indian women’s hockey team, her journey is truly inspiring.

In 1983, Savitri made history by being selected for the national team. This was a significant achievement, as she became the first tribal woman from Jharkhand to join the ranks of the Indian women’s hockey team. During her career from 1983 to 1986, she represented India in several international tournaments. At that time, women’s sports were not given the recognition they deserve, yet Savitri’s passion drove her forward.

She said, “Hockey in those days had a different spirit. Facilities were limited, but dedication was plentiful.” This mindset fueled her commitment to the game despite challenges. Training sessions were tough, and resources were scarce. Often, she had to manage finances with just Rs. 50 for months. However, support from fellow athletes and coaches helped her believe in her talent.

Today, women’s hockey is gaining momentum. Recent statistics show that the popularity of women’s sports has surged, with viewership increasing by over 50% in the last five years. Savitri’s efforts and those of other trailblazers contributed to this growth. She has remained involved in hockey, even after retiring as a player. From 2001 to 2008, she served as the assistant coach for the state women’s hockey team, nurturing young talent. Now, as a selector for the Indian team, she continues to shape the future of women’s hockey.

Savitri also believes in empowering the next generation. Her work at the Ranchi Railway Division allows her to encourage young athletes to find strength in sports while developing mental resilience. She emphasizes that success comes from a sincere effort, not just talent.

On the upcoming International Women’s Day, Savitri stresses that resilience is key. “No matter the obstacles, stay focused on your goals,” she says. Her life serves as a beacon of hope for girls everywhere, proving that determination can overcome any barrier.

Savitri Purti’s story exemplifies the power of dreams and the spirit of women’s empowerment. She encourages young girls to pursue their aspirations, regardless of their backgrounds. Her journey from a small village to the national stage proves that big dreams require unwavering resolve, not just resources.
