Wheeling University Women’s Rugby team kicked off their Spring 7’s season on Saturday in Landisville, PA, at the 2025 Frostbite 7’s. They faced two challenging matches, starting strong but ultimately splitting the results. In their first game, they dominated Kutztown with a solid 39-0 victory. However, they stumbled in their second game against AIC, facing a tough loss of 31-0.

Game One: Wheeling 39, Kutztown 0
The Cardinals came out strong in their first-ever 7’s game. Captain Ema Tai set the tone early, scoring the team’s first try just moments into the match. Although the conversion kick was missed, Wheeling led 5-0. Tai scored again soon after, bringing the score to 10-0. The team’s fluid passing led to Riley Bonds scoring her first career try, stretching their lead to 15-0. The defense stood firm, keeping Kutztown out of the try zone.
Before halftime, Jemmely Rivera and Alexis Dallas added tries, giving Wheeling a commanding 25-0 lead. In the second half, Alli Davis joined the scoring, and Dakota Burgess successfully converted the kick, making it 32-0. Tamzin Boyce finished off the scoring with another try, sealing the game at 39-0.
In total, six Cardinals scored tries, with Ema Tai leading the charge with two tries for 10 points. Each scoring player contributed significantly, setting a promising tone for the season.
Game Two: AIC 31, Wheeling 0
The second game tested the Cardinals against AIC, one of the top teams in NCAA 7’s. Despite their earlier success, Wheeling struggled to find their rhythm against AIC’s fierce defense. The Yellow Jackets took a commanding 21-0 lead by halftime. Although Wheeling pushed hard in the last moments of the match, they couldn’t score, ending the game at 31-0.
With day one wrapped up, Wheeling stood at 1-1 in pool play. They are eager to bounce back on Sunday with two more matches. Local rivals Walsh and Penn State await them, and the team is determined to compete for the Frostbite 7’s trophy.
The Wheeling University Women’s Rugby Team is back in action on Sunday, March 2nd, starting against Walsh at 10:20 AM.
