Florida State University (FSU) just received a significant boost in its fight against student food insecurity. Brian and Kathryn Ballard donated a historic $1 million to expand the Food for Thought Pantry. This donation is the largest ever received by FSU’s Student Affairs.
The Food for Thought Pantry has been helping students since 2009. In this past year alone, the pantry served nearly 58% more students. According to a recent American College Health Association survey, about 45% of college students across the U.S. struggle with food insecurity. This makes the pantry’s work even more vital.
Hal Gentile, Assistant Dean of FSU’s Basic Needs Program, expressed excitement about the donation. He said it will allow for major upgrades to the pantry, making it more efficient and inviting. “We want to create a space that feels like a part of Florida State University,” he noted. The improvements aim to help students feel supported and welcomed.
Amy Hecht, the Vice President of Student Affairs, shared why this donation is so important. She emphasized that for students to succeed academically, they need to have their basic needs met. It’s hard to focus on classes when you’re worrying about your next meal.
Gentile reached out to students who might feel alone in their struggles. He encouraged them to seek support, promising that the pantry is there to help.
As the pantry expands, it will be able to accept even more donations, allowing it to serve a growing number of students. This initiative highlights the importance of community support in higher education.
