Florida State University (FSU) recently held a special event to honor both local and international participants of the Fulbright Program. The reception took place on November 18, 2025, at the Longmire Building.
The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, promotes cross-cultural understanding between Americans and people from over 160 countries. FSU has been participating in this program since 1951 and has gained recognition as one of the leading institutions for Fulbright scholars and students.
In the upcoming 2025-2026 cycle, four FSU students will research in countries like the U.K., Colombia, the Slovak Republic, and Argentina. Additionally, four faculty members will teach and conduct research in Ireland, Taiwan, Hungary, and India. On campus, 13 international students from countries like Indonesia and Armenia are part of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program.
Steve McDowell, FSU’s assistant provost for International Initiatives, opened the event. He emphasized FSU’s commitment to global education. Provost James Clark highlighted FSU’s achievements in producing Fulbright scholars and students, noting their contributions to international collaboration.
The event featured inspiring speeches from Fulbright alumni. Hanim Astuti from Indonesia, who began her studies during the COVID-19 pandemic, shared her journey. She attended classes online at odd hours to adjust to the time difference. Now close to completing her Ph.D., Astuti reflected on her gratitude for the opportunities FSU has provided.
Ruby Lee, a two-time Fulbright recipient and director at FSU, spoke about her learning experiences in Finland and Kosovo. She emphasized that education is about encouraging curiosity rather than seeking perfection.
Serhiy Kvit, the rector of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Ukraine, noted the program’s significance during challenging times for his country, citing it as a pillar of American leadership.
Another Fulbright grantee, Hayk Bejanyan from Armenia, talked about fostering partnerships between FSU and his home university. He celebrated a recent personal milestone, welcoming his first child during his Fulbright experience.
Data shows that culturally diverse educational platforms, like the Fulbright Program, lead to richer academic and social environments. According to a recent survey by the Institute of International Education, Fulbright alumni report high rates of community involvement and increased intercultural competency after their experiences abroad.
Overall, the FSU Fulbright Reception showcased the power of educational exchange and the transformative effect it can have on individuals and communities, reinforcing the importance of global citizenship.
