The classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich is getting a fresh twist. Meet Jams, a new brand launched by 26-year-old Connor Blakley. This frozen treat aims to compete with the familiar Uncrustables, already a favorite in lunch boxes and locker rooms.
With support from athletes like soccer star Alex Morgan and NFL players C.J. Stroud and Micah Parsons, Jams is aiming high. You’ll find its sandwiches in 3,000 Walmart stores across the country.
Unlike Uncrustables, which has held a strong grip on the market, Jams hopes to attract health-conscious folks. Blakley promotes his product as free from seed oils, dyes, and high fructose corn syrup. Plus, it boasts more protein per ounce than any other peanut butter and jelly sandwich out there. Each Jams sandwich packs 10 grams of protein and has a lower sugar content compared to its competitors.
Interestingly, Smucker’s, the parent company of Uncrustables, announced plans to remove synthetic food colors from their products by 2027. This trend highlights a growing demand for healthier options in our food choices.
Currently, Jams comes in two flavors: strawberry and mixed berry. The sandwiches weigh in at 74 grams, a bit heftier than Uncrustables at 58 grams. Jams will sell for $5.97 per box, compared to Uncrustables at $4.34.
Blakley, who left high school at 17 to pursue his passion, tested over 250 versions of his sandwiches. Manufacturing takes place in Ohio and Wisconsin.
But it won’t be easy. Smucker’s reported that Uncrustables generated over a billion dollars in revenue last year and recently opened a new factory in Alabama to keep up with demand. In fact, NFL teams alone consume more than 80,000 Uncrustables yearly, showcasing the appeal of quick and filling snacks for athletes.
Blakley believes convenience and nostalgia are key drivers for the popularity of PB&J sandwiches. “These traits make this category attractive,” he says. As health trends grow, Jams might just carve out a unique spot in the crowded sandwich market.
