The Fullerton School District (FSD) is stepping up to support families during the ongoing federal government shutdown. From now until November 20, FSD is running a food drive to help those affected by this situation.
Since the shutdown began, many families have faced delays in essential benefits, particularly through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), known locally as CalFresh. This program is crucial for providing food assistance to low-income families.
FSD is asking the community to donate non-perishable food items like canned goods, rice, pasta, and cereal. You can drop off donations at any school office or the FSD District Office at 1401 W. Valencia Drive, Fullerton, CA.
Dr. Chad Hammitt, Deputy Superintendent of FSD, acknowledges the impact of the closure on families. “Even though our school meal programs are still running, we realize that many families are struggling,” he said. This food drive aims to ensure that no family goes without during these tough times.
The district’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL) department and other teams recently launched a program to distribute food boxes to families in need. Within just a week, they managed to deliver 95 food boxes to over 365 individuals, thanks to contributions from community partners like Bracken’s Kitchen.

Historically, community support during crises has made a significant difference. In past shutdowns, similar initiatives saw people rallying together to provide relief. This shows how important it is to come together in hard times.
Fullerton School District serves over 11,000 students and offers various programs aimed at enriching student education, from dual language academies to advanced placement courses. Its mission focuses on creating a safe, high-quality learning environment for every student. For more information, you can visit the Fullerton School District website.
As challenges arise, the resilience of community spirit shines brightly. Fullerton continues to prove that when one family is in need, the entire community feels it and steps up to lend a hand.
