Three Public College Students Will Win $1000 Each in Scholarship Funds

GALECA, the Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, has brought back its Crimson Honors program. This contest offers LGBTQ college students a chance to showcase their film and TV criticism skills. A total of $3000 in scholarships will be awarded to the top three participants.

“In a challenging media landscape, we aim to amplify fresh voices,” says board member Grace Han. “Diversity in entertainment is more important than ever.”

The Crimson Honors program is open to community and state college students in the U.S. and its territories, as well as 2024 graduates. A panel of GALECA members will evaluate student submissions of film, TV, and Broadway criticisms published from March 2024 to March 2025. The three finalists will be recognized for their outstanding commentary.

Winners will receive a $1000 scholarship and a two-year free GALECA membership. They will also get chances to connect with industry professionals within the organization, which comprises over 500 experienced journalists.

To apply, students can submit up to three reviews or commentaries related to film, TV, or New York theater. These can be published through campus media or personal outlets. Applicants must also provide a resume and a 300-word statement about their career aspirations in criticism and entertainment journalism.

All materials should be submitted at Galeca.org/Crimson-Honors by 11:59 p.m. PT on March 20, 2025. Winners will be announced in late April 2025.

The winners of the inaugural Crimson Honors in 2023 have already made waves in entertainment journalism. Ariana Martinez contributes to The Wrap and writes a monthly column for Little Village. Taila Lee works with The Recording Academy for the Grammy Awards, creating online music content. Asha Pruitt serves as a Junior Editor at SLUG, a well-known independent publication in Utah.

Eligibility Criteria

• Current full-time undergraduate students or 2024 graduates at public two-year or four-year colleges in the U.S. who identify as LGBTQ+.
• Students working for external media outlets are not eligible, but internships are allowed.
• Submissions can include non-print formats like radio or podcasts.
• Nonbinary individuals of color or women of color are encouraged to apply.

Required Materials

• One to three reviews or features on film, TV, or Broadway, published between March 2024 and March 20, 2025.
• Video or audio segments should be 2 to 5 minutes long, with a script and link included.
• Only one entry from an external outlet can be submitted; others must be through official campus media or personal channels.
• A resume and a 300-word statement on career goals must be included.

Other Notes

• Non-English submissions are welcome with an English translation.
• All materials submitted will not be returned.
• Label all files with “Last Name_Crimson Honors”.
• Provide links for audiovisual entries; email submissions are not accepted.
