After nearly six years, North Loop Galley is closing its doors. The last day for this popular food hall, which features four eateries, is Saturday, May 10. The remaining vendors include Wrecktangle Pizza, Ono Hawaiian Plates, Ramen Kawae, and Good Boy.

Wrecktangle Pizza was there from the beginning when North Loop Galley opened in 2019 inside the Nordic Building at 729 Washington Avenue North. While the Galley may be shutting down, you can still grab Wrecktangle’s Detroit-style pizza at other locations, like Lynlake and Malcolm Yards, or at Falling Knife Brewing Company.

Food halls have faced tough times since the pandemic. Social distancing made communal seating a challenge. Meanwhile, Graze Food Hall in the North Loop is thriving and bringing in new vendors. Galley’s CEO, Chad Ellingboe, reflected on the closing, mentioning a lack of enticing news surrounding the food hall.

Galley Group, the company behind North Loop Galley, now operates just two locations left in Pittsburgh and Newport, Kentucky. Once, they had ambitious plans to expand but faced setbacks. They previously closed locations in cities like Chicago and Cleveland. For many vendors, including Ono Hawaiian Plates, this closure means a scramble for new opportunities. They hope to stay in the North Loop, but the future is uncertain.

Founded in 2015 by two former naval officers, Galley aimed to open multiple food halls quickly. However, when the pandemic hit, plans changed. Both founders parted ways with the company by early 2020.

Recent studies show that food halls are adapting to changing dining habits, focusing more on takeout and delivery options. As the industry recovers, many businesses are finding innovative ways to attract customers.
