Jameis Winston stepped in with just under three minutes left in the first quarter. Dart had taken a hard hit after a 23-yard scramble. On his first play, Winston connected with wide receiver Jalin Hyatt for a 27-yard touchdown, marking a standout moment for Hyatt, who saw six targets during the game.
After the hit, Dart was checked for a concussion. Although he cleared the protocol, his night was over. Coach Brian Daboll later mentioned that the rookie had merely gotten the wind knocked out of him.
Dart had a solid preseason overall, completing 32 of 47 passes for 372 yards, alongside three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed for 52 yards and another touchdown, showcasing his versatility.
Rookie running back Cam Skattebo made his debut after an injury layoff. The fourth-round pick from Arizona State had three carries for 12 yards, marking a positive start for him.
Tight ends have certainly made an impact this preseason. Rookie Thomas Fidone II, drafted in the seventh round, caught a three-yard touchdown from Tommy DeVito in the second half. DeVito took the reins for the rest of the game, leading three consecutive touchdown drives. One highlight was a 41-yard catch-and-run by running back Jonathan Ward.
As for DeVito, he completed 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns, boasting an impressive passer rating of 147.5.
In other news, Andrew Thomas successfully passed his physical and returned to practice. The talented left tackle had surgery last season after a foot injury in October. The Giants treated his recovery cautiously, placing him on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp. Coach Brian Daboll noted that they were taking it slow but were happy with his progress. “We’ll keep building him,” he said.
This preseason has been crucial for both rookies and veterans, illustrating the depth and potential of the team. The balance between talent and experience could be a game-changer as they gear up for the regular season.
