Gardner-Webb University has officially chosen Nate Evans as its 14th president. He takes over after serving as interim president since February, following the departure of William M. Downs to Campbell University. Since October 2020, Evans was the vice president for advancement, where he played a key role in fundraising efforts. Under his leadership, the university has raised over $30 million, significantly contributing to scholarships and campus enhancements.
Evans brings experience as a former East Carolina University staff member, with over eight years in admissions and advancement. An Air Force veteran, he expressed gratitude to the university community for their support during his transition. “In the past eight months, I’ve seen the strength and commitment of Gardner-Webb,” he said. He emphasized the university’s mission to empower students and enhance its impact in the community.
Located about 50 miles west of Charlotte in Boiling Springs, Gardner-Webb serves around 3,125 students, including 1,840 undergraduates. With tuition and fees at $34,760, it’s notable that 99% of students receive some form of financial aid. On-campus living costs are approximately $11,410.
The university’s recent achievements under Evans include major philanthropic donations, such as a $1.85 million gift—the largest in over 25 years. Additionally, Gardner-Webb secured a $2.16 million federal grant for its College of Health Sciences. The university’s endowment stands at $85 million, reflecting its financial health.
Board Chair Rev. Dr. Lamont Littlejohn Jr. praised Evans for his leadership, highlighting his vision and commitment. Evans holds a bachelor’s in exercise and sports science and a master’s in human resource management. His five-year plan focuses on growth, enhancing academic programs, and strengthening ties with churches and regional organizations.
As president, Evans aims to forge a path that ensures Gardner-Webb thrives as a Christ-centered institution. With his and his wife Brittany’s deep involvement in university life, they represent a commitment to both education and community service.
