A new monthly food distribution in Gary is fast becoming a lifeline for families struggling to make ends meet. This initiative is hosted by New Hope Baptist Church, with support from Raymond Ingram Ministries and the East Texas Food Bank. As food prices continue to rise, many families are finding it hard to put meals on the table.
The program began in September at New Hope Baptist Church, located next to the fire station on FM 2260. Every third Wednesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m., locals can pick up a free grocery bag. They can also fill out applications for further assistance right on the spot. Sherri Britton, the volunteer coordinator, noted the increasing turnout, which speaks to the growing need in the community.
“The first distribution saw a little over 20 people, and each time since, more newcomers showed up,” Britton shared. “There’s definitely a demand, and we’re here to help.” The application process is straightforward. Those facing hardships—like job loss or displacement—automatically qualify for assistance.
The program also aims to support seniors who might not have easy transportation. Volunteers recently delivered snacks to a homebound resident, showing how the community is coming together. Anyone aware of an elderly person in need can reach out for help.
Such programs are crucial, especially in rural areas where access to food can be challenging. Long distances and limited transportation often make it hard for families to reach larger food pantries. Ingram Ministries has been providing support across the county, with the new Gary site adding more options for those in need.
Besides offering food, Britton hopes to create a sense of community. “This isn’t just about food; it’s about support, prayer, and connection,” she emphasized. “We want people to know that we care and are here for them.”
In today’s world, food insecurity is widespread. According to recent studies by Feeding America, over 38 million people in the U.S. face hunger. Initiatives like the one in Gary are vital as they address both the immediate need for food and foster a spirit of togetherness in challenging times.
