SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 11 UC Santa Barbara Men’s Volleyball team pulled off a stunning upset against No. 4 UC Irvine, winning 3-2 after a previous loss earlier in the week. George Bruening led the charge with 20 kills, while Joe Wallace contributed 15 digs, marking the Gauchos’ third top-ten win of the season. This victory also ended a long-standing losing streak against Irvine, their first win over them since 2022.
In the first set, the Anteaters took control early, finishing at 25-16. Despite starting strong with a 3-0 lead, the Gauchos struggled as Irvine quickly rallied to take charge.
However, UCSB turned things around in the second set, grabbing it 25-23. They managed to maintain an early lead and, despite some back-and-forth action, time and again found their way back, finally sealing the set with strong plays.
The third set saw Irvine bounce back as they took a solid 25-18 win. The Gauchos ensured fierce competition in the fourth, dominating with a 25-17 score that showcased their resilience. Bruening shone brightly with six kills in this set alone.
The deciding fifth set turned into a nail-biter. The teams were neck-and-neck, trading points. At one moment, the Anteaters threatened to take match point at 14-13, but a heroic effort from Ben Pearson, who scored critical points, brought the score even again. Ultimately, Bruening’s final kill secured the win for UCSB, finishing the set 17-15.
Overall, Bruening’s performance shined—averaging four kills per set and achieving season-high point totals. The team collectively set new season records with 61 kills and 57 assists.
The Gauchos will next face Cal Lutheran in The Thunderdome, providing them another chance to build on this momentum.
