Ohio State University Welcomes Back Gordon Gee as Advisor
Ohio State University (OSU) is bringing back Gordon Gee, the former president of West Virginia University, as an advisor this year. At 81, Gee has a wealth of experience, having spent over four decades in higher education.
During his time at OSU, he held the position of president twice, from 1990 to 1998 and again from 2007 to 2013. He’s also led universities like Vanderbilt, Brown, and the University of Colorado. His return to OSU includes academic residencies at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, the Moritz College of Law, and the Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society.
Gee will work closely with OSU leaders, including Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating that serving OSU is a great privilege.
OSU President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. emphasized the importance of having experienced voices in higher education as the university aims to lead future academic developments. Gee’s familiarity with OSU and insights will be valuable in these discussions.
This move reflects a growing trend in academia where experienced leaders guide institutions through challenges and changes. Universities increasingly seek out seasoned professionals to help shape their strategic priorities. As seen in recent surveys, nearly 70% of higher education leaders believe that mentorship from seasoned administrators strengthens academic institutions.
No specific details have been shared about Gee’s compensation, but his return highlights the value placed on expertise in navigating the future of higher education.
