The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has approved a US$67 million funding boost to help regions facing significant environmental challenges. This initiative, backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), targets nine impactful projects across Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East. These areas are grappling with issues like biodiversity loss and climate change that put their communities and ecosystems at risk.
The funded projects focus on key areas essential for both the environment and local economies:
- Protecting biodiversity in lakes, forests, and peatlands
- Restoring coastal and marine environments
- Building resilience in conflict-affected areas
- Addressing water shortages and land degradation
- Empowering local and Indigenous communities to manage wildlife
- Conserving medicinal plant species
- Promoting nature-based solutions for conservation
These initiatives aim to safeguard both people and nature while creating sustainable economic opportunities.
Marcos Neto, the UN Assistant Secretary-General, emphasized the urgent need for action. He stated, “Investing in action is not optional.” He highlighted that these projects are crucial for development and will allow funds to flow directly to communities and partners, fostering more resilient futures.
The UNDP plans to collaborate with a diverse group, including private companies and local governments. This partnership is expected to attract over five times the approved funding through additional investments, which can help mitigate risks and spur innovation in environmental strategies. This proactive approach could save millions by helping communities adapt to changing environmental conditions.
As global ecosystems face increasing pressure, this funding comes at a pivotal time. The projects encourage a shift toward sustainable development, moving beyond mere survival to building long-term resilience. UNDP aims to:

This funding was approved during the GEF’s 70th Council meeting in December 2025, where representatives from 186 governments discussed ongoing initiatives. The GEF also endorsed more than US$350 million for various projects, which are crucial as the world approaches the 2030 environmental targets.
GEF CEO Carlos Manuel Rodríguez remarked that these investments are vital for establishing stronger economies and resilient communities. They are part of broader efforts help nations address the intertwined issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
Additionally, this new funding aligns with UNDP’s ongoing commitments to climate action and biodiversity preservation, further supporting efforts to create cleaner and more equitable energy access while protecting vulnerable populations.
