General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff, recently shared important insights on the Indian Army’s evolving role in society. In an interview, he highlighted that the army’s duties extend beyond defense to include nation-building efforts. “Building the nation is our shared responsibility,” he remarked, emphasizing the army’s integral part in India’s growth towards becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ or developed India.

Historically, army camps were set up far from civilian areas to minimize contact with locals. However, General Dwivedi indicated that today’s Indian Army is woven into the nation’s fabric, playing an essential role in various domains. He stated, “The Indian Army aims to support a Viksit Bharat,” underscoring their commitment to the nation’s development.

When discussing emergency responses, General Dwivedi was clear about the army’s need for swift action. In cases of crises, like stampedes, he directed that the army should immediately respond rather than wait for formal requests for help. He also pointed out the importance of being proactive along the northern border, ensuring readiness as civil administration might not always react quickly.

According to General Dwivedi, a secure environment is vital if India wishes to become a $30 trillion economy. He stated that the army must actively participate in ensuring safety and facilitating infrastructure growth to improve living standards.

Looking ahead, he mentioned the Indian Army’s potential role in India’s bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. He expressed excitement about contributing to this goal, citing the army’s existing resources and infrastructure. He referred to the success of the recent National Games, where the army’s Sports Control Board won 68 gold medals, demonstrating their capability in sports. “We are ready to train our athletes and help them achieve greatness,” he noted.

Furthermore, he discussed the importance of planning and teamwork for success in this Olympic mission. The army is prepared to provide necessary resources, manpower, and even form new battalions to support the initiative. “Early planning is crucial,” he emphasized, urging collaboration to turn their Olympic dreams into reality.

Reflecting on his journey within the military, General Dwivedi shared how family influenced his aspirations. Growing up, he was inspired by stories of freedom fighters and soldiers, which sparked his interest in serving his country. “My family environment always encouraged me to aim for something meaningful,” he recalled.

He recognized three key values vital to success in the army: a positive attitude, adaptability, and competence. “These pillars shape how we function,” he explained. General Dwivedi’s focus has always been on leading by example rather than seeking recognition. His time at the National Defence Academy instilled in him a sense of discipline and a desire to uplift his unit.

In all, General Upendra Dwivedi’s vision reflects a strong commitment to not only defend but also contribute to a prosperous India.
