PHOENIX – Every day, St. Vincent de Paul helps around 6,000 people. On February 28, they received a generous donation from Durant’s, which included fresh, quality ingredients.
This week marks a bittersweet moment for Jack McElroy, the former owner of Durant’s.
He explained, “We loved running Durant’s, but it was time for us to step back. We hoped to find someone who valued its history.” Letting go is tough for McElroy, especially since his father co-founded the restaurant with Jack Durant in 1950. However, he finds comfort in seeing good done for the community, like the food donation that took place on Friday. A truckload of food from Durant’s kitchen was sent to feed those in need at St. Vincent de Paul.
Marc Lupino, Chef at Prime Steak Concepts, shared his thoughts on the donation: “We had a lot of steaks and fish. It’s a shame to waste food like that. It’s amazing to know Chris and St. Vincent de Paul can use it.” This generous act means a lot to Head Chef Christopher Hoffman, who prepares meals for thousands each day at St. Vincent de Paul.
Students from Brophy College Prep, which the Mastro brothers attended, also volunteered their time to help, showing their support during this transition for Durant’s.
Hoffman praised the students: “Brophy is fantastic. They come over and help us at St. Vincent’s a few times a week.”
Lupino mentioned that Durant’s plans to hold events in the future once they reopen. They are actively searching for positions for employees impacted by the closure at other restaurants owned by the company.
