Generous Twin Cities Volunteers Deliver Hundreds of Shoes and Vital Health Screenings to Homeless Community

Hundreds of people benefited from a donation event in St. Paul, Minnesota, on Saturday. The “Our Hearts to Your Soles” event provided essential shoes and services to those in need.

Around 400 individuals, including families and pets, lined up outside the Catholic Charities Dorothy Day building. More than 100 volunteers, including doctors and nurses, helped attendees pick the right shoes and provided them with warm socks for the winter. Many received legal advice on housing, health screenings, vaccinations, and foot care.

This event celebrates its 19th year and partners with Red Wing Shoes, which donated 500 pairs of footwear. Dr. Lance Silverman, an orthopedic surgeon and the event’s organizer, noted that Minnesota has the highest demand for these services. He emphasized the crucial role of shoes for those facing homelessness. “When you’re struggling, your feet help you find safety and stability,” he said.

Many attendees shared their gratitude. One person mentioned that new shoes allowed him to take the metro, which previously required appropriate footwear. Another expressed appreciation for safety shoes needed for job applications.

Toni Howell, 72, has been living in a shelter and was fitted for new boots. She highlighted the importance of proper footwear for the cold winter months. “You need your feet protected,” she said.

The event not only provides immediate help but also aims to reduce future healthcare costs. Early assistance can prevent individuals from needing hospitalization for avoidable health issues.

Experts suggest that these community-focused initiatives are crucial. According to a recent survey by the National Alliance to End Homelessness, access to basic needs significantly affects a person’s ability to regain stability.

Such gatherings foster community support while addressing foundational needs. “Events like these can make all the difference,” a volunteer remarked, appreciating the chance to directly impact lives. By providing shoes and essential services, local efforts like “Our Hearts to Your Soles” demonstrate the power of community in supporting those who need it most.
