GRAND BLANC — The Grand Blanc community recently came together in a remarkable way to support its local food pantry, FISH of Grand Blanc. During the semi-annual Feed the Bus food drive, they gathered an impressive 6,640 pounds of food and raised $7,086, according to Barb Smith, the chairwoman of FISH.
“I can hardly express how proud I am of this community,” Smith shared. “Given the current financial challenges, to see such generosity is heartwarming. I’m truly grateful.”
The event, held on May 16 at Grand Blanc High School and Kroger, initially started slow due to cloudy skies. However, as the sun peeked through, more people came out with their donations of non-perishable food items. Notably, Myers Elementary School contributed 236 boxes of cereal, while several generous donors each gave $1,000.
Smith pointed out that the situation at FISH had become “critical.” Without USDA food supplies lately, the pantry struggled to meet community needs. This is concerning as food insecurity continues to rise in the area. Currently, FISH serves over 400 individuals every week, including many seniors. The number of people seeking help keeps growing.
“It’s inspiring to see how supportive our community is,” Smith said. “People really stepped up, and it made for an incredible day.”
School food programs also play a crucial role during the year, providing over 1,800 students with free breakfast and around 5,200 with free lunch daily. However, those meals will not be available during the summer, highlighting the importance of initiatives like this food drive.
The pantry has an ongoing need for items such as chunky soups, beef stew, chili, canned tuna, chicken, and, of course, macaroni and cheese. All donations directly support families within the Grand Blanc Community School district.
According to recent statistics from Feeding America, one in eight Americans struggles with food insecurity. This crisis does not discriminate; it impacts families, seniors, and children alike. Local drives like this one are essential in combating these rising numbers and providing immediate relief.
As we navigate these tough times, it’s clear that community engagement is vital. Volunteering, donating, and simply spreading the word can make a significant difference.
