George Clooney recently opened up about his life in France and what it means for his family. The actor, known for his roles in films and his advocacy work, has chosen to raise his eight-year-old twins, Ella and Alexander, away from Hollywood’s glare.
In a candid chat with Esquire, Clooney explained why he prefers France to Los Angeles. He believes that his children are better off in a place that doesn’t prioritize fame and celebrity culture. “In France, they kind of don’t give a shit about fame. I don’t want them worried about paparazzi or being compared to other famous kids,” he said. Instead, his children experience a more grounded lifestyle that includes farm chores and family meals, away from screens.
Clooney himself grew up on a farm, and he reflected on how those roots shaped him. He worried about the influence of Hollywood on his kids, noting, “They have a much better life.” His father, Nick, worked in television, creating a unique dynamic in their family. Clooney feels fortunate that the age gap between him and his kids means they are unlikely to face comparisons. He humorously stated, “By the time he actually will have done anything, I’m gonna be gumming my bread.”
He emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency, teaching his kids to pitch in around the house. “It’s important to me that they can survive,” he explained. This hands-on approach includes everything from fixing household items to getting involved in simple chores.
Clooney also talked about the pressure of returning to the stage in a recent Broadway adaptation of his film Good Night, and Good Luck. He admitted that age can bring its own challenges. “Your brain starts to lock up,” he joked, mentioning that he prepared for each performance by rehearsing in his dressing room.
Reflecting on his career, Clooney talked about his past struggles with alcohol and drug use. While he never became addicted, he acknowledged having periods where he drank heavily. “It was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative,” he remarked, highlighting the darker side of his early years in the industry.
Watching older films with his wife has prompted him to reassess his past. He mentioned their experience watching Animal House, noting how some aspects of the humor didn’t hold up well. “It’s terrible!” he said with a mix of nostalgia and disbelief.
By sharing these insights, Clooney not only gives a glimpse into his life but also offers a perspective on the challenges of balancing fame and family. His approach to parenting emphasizes a desire for normalcy and resilience, showing that even Hollywood stars navigate complex family dynamics.
