George Mason Softball Triumphs Over Hampton
In a gripping matchup on April 21, George Mason University’s softball team clinched a 6-4 victory against Hampton at the GMU Softball Complex. The Patriots, now 24-20 overall, displayed impressive offensive strength, particularly in a pivotal three-run sixth inning. Although they were out-hit 11-7, their timely hits made the difference.
Game Highlights
The first inning set the tone. Logan Pickford walked, followed by another walk for Tess Altevers Harris, advancing Pickford to second. Alyssa Hopkins then reached on a fielder’s choice, and Elyssa DeRosa hit a single that brought Altevers Harris home. Kaleigh Friend later added another run with a single, putting the Patriots up 2-0.
In the third inning, Pickford’s single and subsequent steal of second paved the way for Altevers Harris, who tripled to right field. This added another run to the board, extending the lead to 3-0.
Hampton fought back in the fourth. Carmynn Bonner scored following a ground into a double play, cutting the Patriots’ lead to 3-1.
The sixth inning was crucial. Hampton managed to score when Bonner doubled and later advanced on Violet Salazar’s double. However, the Patriots responded strongly. After a series of great plays, they scored three runs. Alyssa Hopkins started the rally with a single, and Kamryn Inman’s walk drove in a run. Payton Auerbach then delivered a key single, driving in two more runs. By the end of the sixth, George Mason was leading 6-2.
Hampton made the final inning tense with two unearned runs off Bonner’s double, but George Mason secured the win with a final score of 6-4.
Player Performance
Harlowe Nigh had an outstanding game, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just one earned run, all while striking out four batters. Abbey Lane stepped in for relief, pitching 2.0 innings with three runs allowed. Also notable was Tess Altevers Harris, who not only recorded a triple but also contributed an RBI. Payton Auerbach’s two RBIs showcased the team’s offensive depth.

The Patriots will take on Howard next on April 22 at 5 p.m. at the George Mason Softball Complex, aiming to keep their momentum going.
