ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – George Mason’s baseball team put on an impressive show, crushing St. Bonaventure 21-2. Junior shortstop Owen Clyne led the team with five hits, including a three-run home run and five RBIs. Sophomore designated hitter Owen Hull also shined, hitting two two-run homers and finishing with four RBIs.
Here’s a quick look at the highlights:
- Clyne: 5-for-6, 5 RBIs, 2 runs scored.
- Hull: 3-for-4, 4 RBIs, 4 runs scored.
- Nick Barenze, the catcher, went 3-for-3 with his first four RBIs since joining the Patriots.
- Freshman Lucas Alberti added to the excitement with a 4-for-5 performance, scoring three times.
- Pitcher Sam Lavin pitched six strong innings, improving to 3-0 this season.
George Mason (15-7, 3-1 A-10) jumped ahead early, thanks to a two-run homer from Hull in the first inning. Despite St. Bonaventure (7-13, 0-4 A-10) making it a one-run game with an RBI single in the second, the Patriots dominated after that.
In a stunning fourth inning, they scored 10 runs, sending 14 batters to the plate. Clyne’s three-run homer was a key moment, pushing the score to 5-1. The team continued to build on that lead, with multiple players contributing to the scoring.
This game marked a high point for the Patriots, who recorded 25 hits, a season high. Notably, the record for most hits in a single game for the program is 28, set against Holy Cross back in 1997.
St. Bonaventure struggled, using five different pitchers throughout the game. Starter James Capellupo was unable to contain the offensive onslaught, giving up 12 runs during his outing.
The response on social media from fans has been enthusiastic, highlighting the strong performance and excitement around the team this season. As the Patriots move forward in A-10 play, they look like a team to watch.
The two teams meet again for a rematch on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Handler Park.
