George Mason Women’s Tennis Faces Off Against Fordham in Challenging Winds: Match Highlights and Insights

Fairfax, Va. — The Mason women’s tennis team faced off against Fordham in their first outdoor match of the spring season but lost 0-4. It was a windy day, making conditions challenging for both teams.

Fordham set the tone early by winning the doubles point. The Patriots’ highlight came at the #2 doubles, where Mary Young and Brooklyn Siegel fought hard but eventually lost in a tiebreaker to Fordham’s Paola Dalmonico and Catalina Padilla.

As singles play began, the players contended with strong gusts of wind, reaching up to 30 miles per hour. Fordham clinched the match by winning at the #1, #3, and #6 spots. Notably, Maya Bayat was performing well, leading Paola Dalmonico, 6-4, 4-1, when the match was decided. Lauren Splett was in a tight battle, having lost the first set but evening things out in the second. Mary Young was also engaged in a tough contest at #2.

Head Coach Steve Curtis commented on the match, saying, “This was our first outdoor match, and overall I think we played well. The wind posed a challenge, but I was pleased with how we handled it against one of the top teams in the A-10.”

Looking ahead, the Patriots are set to travel to South Carolina on March 8th for the PTR SpringFest in Hilton Head. They will play against teams like Western Illinois, SIUE, Grace College, and West Virginia State. Their next home match will be on March 21st against Longwood, featuring both the women’s and men’s teams.
