WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women’s basketball team faced a tough defeat against Marquette University, losing 67-59 in a BIG EAST Conference game at McDonough Arena. With this loss, the Hoyas now stand at 12-10 overall and 5-8 in conference play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 15-7 and 9-4.
Coach’s Thoughts
Coach Darnell Haney wasn’t pleased with the team’s start. He noted, “We didn’t bring our defense today. We showed glimpses, but we need to be more consistent. Marquette controlled the game, and our urgency was lacking.”
Game Highlights
The game had its ups and downs. Marquette jumped ahead early, and after a strong 13-3 run, they held a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter. Georgetown’s Destiny Agubata managed to put points on the board, ending the quarter at 16-8.
The second quarter was a battle. Georgetown found a spark when Summer Davis led a 13-2 run, making it a one-possession game. By halftime, Khadee Hession’s buzzer-beater narrowed the gap to 31-27.
In the second half, the Hoyas kept fighting back. They scored early, closing in on Marquette, but the Golden Eagles retaliated with a 17-2 run, pushing the lead to 16 points. After three quarters, Georgetown trailed 52-39 despite late free throws from Khia Miller.
In the final quarter, Georgetown continued to push hard. They mounted a 9-2 run but ultimately fell short, ending the game with a score of 67-59.
Standout Performances
Khadee Hession led Georgetown with 20 points and made four steals. Agubata contributed 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. The team faced challenges, shooting only 37.7% from the field while Marquette excelled at 54.3%.
The Golden Eagles had Lee Volker shining with 22 points, part of a strong offensive lineup with four players reaching double digits.
Looking Ahead
Georgetown is set to travel for their next matchup against Creighton University. The game will take place at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 4, with the tipoff at 7 p.m. ET. Fans can catch the action live on ESPN+.
This season has shown that defense is key. According to a recent survey by the NCAA, teams with strong defensive records have a 20% higher chance of playoff success. As Georgetown prepares for their next game, they’ll need to tighten up their defense and maintain their energy throughout to turn things around and find success.
