197 Student-Athletes Nominated for Good Works Team
In an exciting announcement, Allstate and the American Football Coaches Association revealed a record 197 nominees for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. This is the highest number in the award’s 34-year history. The nominees include college football players and coaches dedicated to community service and leadership beyond the game. Among these nominees is Pichon Wimbley from Georgia Southern University, recognized for his community work in Statesboro.
Sam Acho, a former NFL linebacker and member of the 2010 Good Works Team, emphasized the significance of this achievement. He said, “These players aren’t just showing up; they’re standing out. Their commitment to service creates lasting change.”
For the second year, Allstate has teamed up with the Wuerffel Foundation to honor student-athletes who excel in community service, academics, and athletics through both the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy.
Danny Wuerffel, a Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer, commented on the impact of these athletes: “When nearly 200 young athletes choose to serve, it creates a ripple effect far beyond the game. Their leadership is as important as their performance.”
The final team roster will consist of 23 award recipients, including 11 from the NCAA FBS and 11 from various divisions. An honorary head coach will also be recognized. A panel of former Good Works Team members, coaches, and journalists will select the final team based on outstanding leadership on and off the field.
In recent years, the focus on athlete involvement in community service has grown, with many players using their platforms to address social issues. For example, a recent survey showed that 75% of college athletes believe they have a responsibility to engage with social causes.
The work these student-athletes do not only inspires others to take action but also demonstrates the profound impact they can have beyond the playing field.
