German Envoy Reports 20% Surge: Nearly 60,000 Indian Students Now Thriving in Germany!

Recently, German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, shared exciting news: nearly 60,000 Indian students are now studying in Germany. This marks a remarkable 20% increase from the previous year. On social media, he encouraged students to consider Germany’s esteemed public universities, which are often more affordable than private ones.

This surge in Indian student enrolment signifies a notable shift in academic trends. According to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Indian students have become the largest group of international students in Germany for two years in a row, surpassing even China. For the winter semester of 2023-24, 49,483 Indian students enrolled in German universities, a significant jump from 42,997 the year before.

The growth isn’t just a recent phenomenon; DAAD reports that the number of Indian students in Germany has more than doubled in five years, going from just 20,810 in 2018-19 to close to 60,000 today. In comparison, last year’s figures showed China with 39,137 students, followed by Syria, Austria, and Turkey.

Interestingly, while the number of Indian students abroad dipped by 15% in 2024, mainly to countries like Canada and the UK, Germany’s popularity surged with a remarkable 67% increase. This shows a clear preference shift among students seeking international education.
