SpaceX has taken a significant step forward with its most powerful Starship yet. On March 16, they conducted a static fire test of the “Super Heavy” first stage. This test involved igniting the booster’s engines while it was secured to Pad 2 at SpaceX’s Starbase in South Texas. This marked the first time a Version 3 (V3) Starship has undergone this testing.

This test didn’t just break records for being the first V3 static fire; it also took place at Pad 2, which will increase Starbase’s launch capacity when fully operational. According to SpaceX, this was part of an initial effort to activate V3, showing off its ability to load cryogenic fuel for the first time.

SpaceX reported that during this test, only 10 out of the planned 33 Raptor engines were ignited. Due to a ground-side issue, the test ended earlier than expected. The next step will be to fire all 33 engines to fully assess the booster’s capabilities.

The ultimate goal is to prepare for Starship’s upcoming flight, which could launch as soon as early to mid-April. This mission will be the first for a V3 vehicle, featuring Booster 19 paired with a Starship upper stage known as Ship 39. Recently, Ship 39 successfully passed a key test designed to determine if it could withstand extreme temperatures and pressure.

The V3 variant stands taller than its predecessor, measuring 408.1 feet compared to 403.9 feet. Notably, it’s also much more robust, with a capacity to carry over 100 tons to low Earth orbit—more than double the 35-ton limit of the V2 model. Elon Musk has emphasized the importance of this increased power, which is crucial for future missions to the Moon and Mars.

In a recent overview of SpaceX’s progress, industry experts have noted the increasing pace of space innovations. According to a 2022 report by the Space Foundation, commercial space investment reached a record high of $47 billion, nearly double from just a few years earlier. This trend signifies a growing interest in expanding human reach beyond Earth. Many observers are excited to see how SpaceX’s breakthrough technologies might impact future space travel and exploration, especially with NASA’s Artemis program returning humans to the Moon.
