Millions are being encouraged to get ready for flooding as Flood Action Week kicks off. The Environment Agency wants everyone to prepare—whether it’s checking their flood risk, signing up for alerts, or planning how to respond.

Recent events remind us why preparation is essential. After several storms last winter and Storm Amy earlier this month, communities should stay vigilant. Even though this summer was dry, flooding remains a serious threat.

A staggering 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are at risk from rivers, the sea, or surface water. Yet, a recent poll revealed that 45% of people haven’t even checked their flood risk. Understanding this risk is crucial for safety.

Caroline Douglass, from the Environment Agency, highlighted that climate change is making our weather more unpredictable. “We’re seeing wetter winters and drier summers. By preparing and knowing your risks, you can defend yourself and your loved ones against flooding’s impact,” she stated.

Emma Hardy, the Minister for Floods, emphasized ongoing investments in flood defenses. With more than £10.5 billion allocated until 2036, the government aims to build and repair flood barriers, protecting communities and jobs.

Statistics show that last winter saw over 3,000 flood alerts issued. With funding of £2.65 billion slated for boosting national resilience, the Environment Agency is poised to take action. They are ready with mobile pumps and temporary flood barriers to manage water effectively.

Research by Flood Re indicates that simple property-level measures could save the UK hundreds of millions annually. Beyond finances, the emotional impact of flooding can be devastating. Understanding personal risk and taking steps to protect homes is vital.

According to Met Office Chief Meteorologist Will Lang, while we may see drier conditions overall, unexpected heavy rainfall can still occur, especially in vulnerable areas. This reinforces the need for year-round preparedness.

Communities should remain proactive. The government’s increased investment in flood defenses reflects a commitment to safeguarding lives and property. Since July 2024, 151 flood schemes have been completed, offering better protection for over 24,000 properties.
