Get ready, D.C.! A cold front is moving in tonight, bringing the possibility of snow early Friday morning.
Temperatures will drop into the upper teens and lower twenties, creating the perfect conditions for snow. Meteorologists from 7News predict that a low-pressure system will sweep in from North Carolina and southern Virginia, causing any rain or drizzle to turn into snow.
While D.C. might see a light dusting, areas south and east of the city could get around 2 inches of snow. In fact, places like Culpeper, Virginia, and Waldorf, Maryland, are expecting more accumulation than the city itself.
If it feels like snow is showing up a bit early this winter, you’re not mistaken. The last time D.C. had measurable snow in December was back in 2017.
Regardless of snow, the wind chill will make it feel even colder on Friday, staying in the lower teens to twenties all day. Snow is expected to begin between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., continuing steadily until early afternoon before tapering off.
Earlier Thursday, Mayor Muriel Bowser declared the city’s first Extreme Cold Alert of the season, effective from 8 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday. The District Snow Team is already on standby, salting major roadways to keep them safe.

Several local schools have already announced delays or closures. Culpeper County Public Schools will start with a two-hour delay, while Spotsylvania County will be completely closed on Friday.
As the weekend approaches, Saturday will be partly sunny, with temperatures warming up into the 40s. Sunday might also see some clouds, but the chill should start to ease.
