Get Ready for a Trip Down Memory Lane: Zach Braff Returns as J.D. in ABC’s Exciting Scrubs Reboot!

Great news for Scrubs fans! After months of waiting, Zach Braff is officially back as John “J.D.” Dorian in the upcoming Scrubs reboot. This project is being developed by ABC and 20th Television. Though the network and studio have chosen not to comment, insiders confirm Braff has signed on.

Negotiations weren’t easy. They faced several hurdles over money and Braff’s preference to film in Los Angeles instead of Vancouver. At one point, it seemed the reboot might not happen. Thankfully, an agreement was reached, though exact filming locations are still under wraps.

The Scrubs reboot is a complex undertaking. It took extensive discussions with Warner Bros TV, where series creator Bill Lawrence has a deal. Interestingly, he won’t be writing or showrunning this time since he’s busy with four other series, including Shrinking and Ted Lasso.

Now that Braff is on board, 20th TV is likely to secure deals with more original cast members, such as Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid) and Donald Faison (Christopher Turk). They are also looking at bringing back John C. McGinley (Perry Cox) and Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa).

In the past year, Braff expressed hope about the reboot, saying, “I think it’s gonna happen.” Lawrence envisions this version of Scrubs as a blend of revival and reboot, taking us back to familiar characters while introducing new surgical interns.

Since his time on Scrubs, Braff hasn’t slowed down. He earned nominations for directing Ted Lasso and has directed episodes of Shrinking. He’s even set to direct a new HBO project featuring Steve Carell.

In addition to TV, Braff wrapped up a film called Clean Hands, based on the life of drug cop-turned-advocate Kevin Simmers, and will soon be seen in Girls Like Girls.

This reboot shows just how much fans still love Scrubs and its characters. With nostalgia at the forefront of today’s entertainment trends, it’s a smart move for networks—especially since surveys show that 83% of viewers appreciate revisiting beloved shows.
