In this new film, Anthony Mackie takes on the role of Captain America, following Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers. The movie is expected to earn between $80 million and $85 million over the traditional weekend and may reach up to $95 million through the President’s Day holiday. It’s launching in about 4,100 theaters across North America.

Globally, the film could add another $110 million. However, it faces tough competition in China from “Ne Zha 2,” which has already earned over $1.1 billion, making it one of the highest-grossing films in the country’s history. It will also compete with “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” which is being released in theaters internationally, while being available on Peacock in the U.S.

Despite this competition, “Captain America: Brave New World” is expected to have the largest domestic opening of the year. Its box office predictions are in line with other Marvel films released after the pandemic. They surpass 2021’s “Eternals” and “Shang Chi,” which both underperformed, but fall short of hits like “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Marvel has faced challenges recently. Besides the success of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” last year was tough for MCU films. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” was successful, but “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” struggled, marking them as the rare MCU films to lose money. Superhero movies, once blockbuster guarantees, are currently facing a slump. Upcoming Marvel releases include “Thunderbolts” on May 2 and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” on July 25.

The plot of “Captain America: Brave New World” continues from the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and follows events from “Avengers: Endgame.” After Steve Rogers passes on his shield, we see Sam Wilson navigating his new role amid an international crisis, especially after Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (played by Harrison Ford) becomes president. Julius Onah, known for “The Cloverfield Paradox,” directed the film.

In addition to “Captain America,” Sony’s “Paddington in Peru” will also debut this weekend, aiming to earn between $15 million and $17 million over the four-day holiday. The film is showing in 3,700 theaters in North America.

Having already debuted internationally, “Paddington 3” has grossed $103 million so far. The first two films were popular globally and fans are excited for this new adventure with the beloved bear.

Dougal Wilson directs “Paddington 3,” taking over from Paul King. This time, Paddington, voiced by Ben Whishaw, travels to Peru to visit his Aunt Lucy, who lives at a retirement home for bears. The cast also includes Hugh Bonneville, Emily Mortimer, Antonio Banderas, and Olivia Colman.

StudioCanal produced and financed this $90 million sequel, while Sony is handling its distribution in select regions. Early reviews for “Paddington in Peru” have been very positive, with critics appreciating its joyful and uplifting style.
