Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Football team is ready to kick off the 2025 season. They will face Clarion in a non-conference game on Thursday at 6 PM. Last season, Wheeling finished with a solid record of 6-5. It was their third consecutive year with a .500 record or better. This year, redshirt junior Landon Lutz steps in as the starting quarterback. Lutz has experience; he’s played in nine games and set the team’s record with 19 touchdowns last season, with only two interceptions. On defense, the Cardinals will depend on their front six, especially players like Awwal Osinuga and Tyriek Scrivner. This is the fourth time in five years that Wheeling opens against a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) team. Historically, they’ve gone 2-4 in season openers, and this will be their first away game to start the season since 2021, when they narrowly lost to Seton Hill.

During the match against Clarion, they will be meeting for the first time. Clarion enters the game after a tough previous season with a record of 3-8. Despite this, they have strong ties to the Mountain East Conference, boasting a noteworthy past in previous competitions.
