Get Ready for Action! Wheeling Football Kicks Off 2025 Season with Exciting Matchup Against Clarion

Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Football team is ready to kick off the 2025 season. They will face Clarion in a non-conference game on Thursday at 6 PM. Before the game, there will be a special dedication ceremony at Al Jacks Field. The Cardinals are looking to start the season strong and spoil the Golden Eagles’ festivities.

Last season, Wheeling finished with a solid record of 6-5. It was their third consecutive year with a .500 record or better. They began the season with mixed results in non-conference games but turned things around after an early loss streak. A thrilling victory against West Virginia State ignited a strong finish, allowing them to secure a winning season.

This year, redshirt junior Landon Lutz steps in as the starting quarterback. Lutz has experience; he’s played in nine games and set the team’s record with 19 touchdowns last season, with only two interceptions. With some key receivers from last year gone, he’ll need to adapt quickly and utilize his new teammates effectively to keep the passing game dynamic.

On defense, the Cardinals will depend on their front six, especially players like Awwal Osinuga and Tyriek Scrivner. Both had impressive seasons, with Osinuga leading the team in quarterback pressures and Scrivner not far behind. Their ability to disrupt the opposing offense will be crucial for Wheeling’s success this season.

The season includes a full 11-game schedule, starting with three non-conference matchups. This is the fourth time in five years that Wheeling opens against a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) team. Historically, they’ve gone 2-4 in season openers, and this will be their first away game to start the season since 2021, when they narrowly lost to Seton Hill.

During the match against Clarion, they will be meeting for the first time. Clarion enters the game after a tough previous season with a record of 3-8. Despite this, they have strong ties to the Mountain East Conference, boasting a noteworthy past in previous competitions.

As they prepare for kickoff, Wheeling is aiming to carry the momentum from their last successful season into this new challenge. The combination of Lutz’s leadership and a strong defense could make them formidable opponents right out of the gate.

If you’re interested in following the game, it kicks off at 6 PM. You can catch it live online or through live stats provided by Clarion’s athletic site.
