Get Ready for an Epic Adventure: Baldur’s Gate 3 Creator Unveils Their ‘Even Larger’ Next RPG!

Just two years after winning Game of the Year for Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios is back with exciting news. At the Game Awards, they teased their next RPG titled Divinity. This one promises to be even bigger than Baldur’s Gate 3.

While we didn’t get many details or a gameplay preview, a striking cinematic trailer caught everyone’s attention. It featured a man being tortured during a wild ritual, from which hellspawn erupted. This intense imagery sets the tone for what’s to come.

The reveal followed a fun guessing game. A mysterious statue in the California desert sparked fan theories linking it to other big games like Diablo 4 and The Elder Scrolls 6. However, a newly discovered trademark for the Divinity series hinted at its true purpose.

The Divinity franchise started back in 2002 with Divine Divinity, a hack-and-slash action RPG set in a world full of magic and demonic cults. Larian has released several sequels and spin-offs, leading to the beloved Divinity: Original Sin games. These titles gained praise for their engaging stories and turn-based combat.

Despite the success of the Divinity series, nothing topped the popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3. Many fans thought Larian might proceed with a sequel in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, but the studio chose to take a fresh direction. Director Swen Vincke mentioned that it’s now up to Wizards of the Coast to decide on the next steps for their IP. “For us, it’s time to get a new puppy,” he said, emphasizing their eagerness for new challenges.

Looking at the timeline, there was a six-year gap between Divinity: Original Sin II and Baldur’s Gate 3. Fans are hopeful it won’t be another long wait for Divinity.

Interestingly, the gaming community is buzzing about RPGs in the broader landscape. A recent survey indicated that 55% of gamers are excited about new single-player narratives, highlighting a trend toward immersive storytelling. With Divinity on the horizon, Larian is positioned to deliver something special to its fans.
