Ohio Wrestling Team Gears Up for New Season
The Ohio wrestling team is excited about the upcoming season. With a strong preseason behind them, they’re ready to hit the mats with confidence and determination.
Head coach Joel Greenlee, now in his 28th year, is feeling good about the team’s prospects. He remarked, “We have a strong group of veterans who really stepped up in preparation this fall.”
Among the key players are captains Garrett Thompson, Sal Perrine, and Zayne Lehman. Thompson had a standout season last year with a 30-7 record, excelling in duals and MAC matches. Perrine is back after a year away, ready to make a mark in the 174-pound weight class. Lehman, competing at 184 pounds, is known for his leadership and consistency.
Another athlete to watch is Jeremy Olszko. He had a strong performance last season, finishing 22-10 with several victories in MAC competitions. In the middleweights, Derek Raike had a solid record of 16-6.
The lighter weight classes will see contributions from TJ England and Kaden Jett, both bringing valuable experience. Wyatt Schmitt, the heavyweight, aims to improve on his performance from last year.
The Bobcats wrapped up last season with an 8-4 overall record, showing improvement and resilience. Coach Greenlee observed notable growth in his team over the offseason. “We’ve made progress physically and mentally,” he noted. “We’re ahead of where we’ve been in previous years.”
This season, the team is focused on being more assertive in their matches. Greenlee highlighted the importance of wrestling with intent and confidence. “Wrestlers can be nice, but we need to know when to be aggressive,” he said.
The 2025-26 schedule includes exciting events, such as the Ohio Showcase on Nov. 8 and a dual meet against Wisconsin on Nov. 15. These matches are significant opportunities for the team to shine.
Greenlee described this season as both “exciting” and “fun.” He hopes his athletes will enjoy the atmosphere and energy of competition.
As the Bobcats prepare to kick off their season on Nov. 2 at the Southeast Open, they’re ready to make a mark. With strong leadership and talent, this could be a memorable year for the team.
