Why the delay? The scheduling makes sense. Releasing in May avoids competition with other films like 20th Century Studios’ Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere and Paramount’s Regretting You, both set to hit theaters in late October. Plus, the Halloween weekend often isn’t the best time for box office hits.
Interestingly, the mid-May release window was successful for Warner Bros last summer. Their film Final Destination: Bloodlines took in a franchise record of $51.6 million on its opening weekend, leading to a total global gross of $301 million. In contrast, the previous Mortal Kombat movies have earned about $257.8 million worldwide so far.
Audiences are excited for the sequel. Early screenings show strong viewer interest, featuring a cast led by Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, alongside Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, and others. The screenplay, written by Jeremy Slater, is based on the video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.
