As Hamish Hamilton gears up to direct “BTS The Comeback Live: Arirang,” excitement fills the air in Seoul. Hamilton is fresh off directing the Grammys, the Super Bowl halftime show, and the Oscars, an achievement he’s calling the “quadruple crown.”
BTS is set for a huge return, celebrating their first studio album in six years. The anticipation in Seoul is electric. “People are buzzing,” Hamilton shares. “You can feel how big this event is just walking through the streets.”
The concert will be held at Gwanghwamun Square, right by Gyeongbokgung Palace. The event streams live on Netflix, making it accessible worldwide, including early morning spots in the U.S. The outdoor venue poses a challenge since there can’t be any rehearsals on stage. Hamilton admits, “It’s tricky to prepare without practice, but we’ve learned a lot over the years.”
The BTS group, coming back from their mandatory military service, has been involved in the planning from the start. Executive producer Guy Carrington says, “We needed the band to be on board. Without rehearsals, we relied heavily on their cooperation.” The members of BTS—Jin, j-hope, RM, V, Jimin, Jung Kook, and SUGA—were eager to collaborate, making the planning process enjoyable and dynamic.
Their fifth studio album, “Arirang,” releases just before the concert. This comeback not only marks a return for the band, but also a moment of national pride for South Korea. Melanie Fletcher, Done+Dusted North America CEO, emphasized the significance of hosting a show at such a historic site. “This is a huge moment for the country,” she explained, noting the city’s support for the event.
The concert stage is unique, designed to frame the performance visually, allowing both the band and the palace to shine. Carrington describes it as a big LED cube that transforms throughout the show. “We wanted to highlight both the band and the beautiful backdrop,” he said.
While surprises are under wraps, viewers can expect highlights from BTS’s personal journey and the new music. The performance will blend big choreographed numbers with intimate moments that showcase the group’s camaraderie. “You’ll see their personalities shine through,” Carrington added. “They really know how to have fun with each other.”
As the production team works tirelessly, the sense of pride is palpable. Fletcher noted, “The crew is giving it their all, driven by their passion for BTS. This event is historic and truly unprecedented, and everyone feels lucky to be part of it.”
