Students in Penticton enjoyed a vibrant field trip week as the annual Ha Ha Ha Kidzfest returned to Okanagan Lake Park. Taking place from June 5 to 7, the festival drew in thousands with live performances from entertainers across Canada and the spectacular art installation, “Luminarium: Arborialis,” making its debut in British Columbia.
Jacki Kliever, the festival coordinator, shared that about 1,400 kids attended the event on Thursday and Friday for their school visits. Saturday opened the doors to the general public, marking the fifth edition of Kidzfest. This year, the festival moved from its usual spot in Gyro Park to the larger Okanagan Lake Park, showcasing the massive, colorful 11,000-square-foot Luminarium exhibit.
“It’s been a great addition,” Kliever noted. “We’ve worked nearly two years to bring it here.” The Luminarium, with its winding paths and bright domes, offers a unique, immersive experience. It’s not just visually stunning; it encourages exploration and imagination, setting an enchanting vibe for the festival.
The festival featured a lively mix of music, dance, and comedy over its three days. Kliever emphasized that each year introduces new performers to keep the excitement alive. “When you come to Kidzfest, it’s like a fresh experience every time,” she said.
In addition to entertainment, local vendors and various non-profit groups set up fun activities, adding to the community spirit. While the festival wrapped up on Saturday, Luminarium: Arborialis remains open, giving everyone more time to enjoy this unique attraction. Besides Penticton, only Toronto currently hosts the exhibit in Canada.
Interestingly, events like Kidzfest play a crucial role in fostering creativity and social interaction among children. According to a recent survey by the National Endowment for the Arts, participation in arts-related activities can significantly boost kids’ confidence and social skills. This highlights how festivals not only entertain but also enrich the community.
As families continue to seek out engaging activities, events like Kidzfest are vital in providing memorable experiences. It’s a reminder of the joy that comes from creativity and connection.
